A tight vinyl weave in a flecked, linen-like yarn that reads as cloth from across the room and wipes clean with a damp hand. It does not absorb, does not stain and does not need washing between lunches, which is why the same weave turns up on café terraces across the Mediterranean. Heat from a serving dish will not mark it. Roll it, wipe it, put it back down. For a table that gets used hard like outdoors, a kitchen island, a house with children it is the practical answer that still looks considered.
