A shallow iron dish with 55cm diameter held close to the ceiling, lit from underneath so the plate itself never glares. All the light bounces off the inner face and comes back down soft and wide. Matte black outside, so from below it reads as a dark circle rather than a fixture; the illumination seems to arrive from nowhere in particular. Forty or fifty centimetres across, and only a few deep, which makes it the right answer for a low ceiling where a hanging pendant would be in the way.
