A slender column of marble lit from the inside, which turns the stone from an opaque material into a translucent one. Held to a lamp the veining stops being a surface pattern and becomes structure: dark seams reading almost black against a warm honeyed ground, no two columns marked the same way. Hung in a run of two or three over a counter, or single beside a bed, it gives a narrow, tall shaft of light and takes up almost no visual space doing it.
