The tray a jeweller reaches for: a shallow walnut frame with rounded corners and a bed of charcoal suede that holds a chain exactly where it was laid. Nothing is compartmented, which is the whole idea the surface stays open, so what goes on it can be arranged rather than filed. The wood is finished to a low sheen that darkens with handling. Left on a dressing table it turns the morning's decisions into a small display; stacked at the end of the day, it puts them away without shutting them out of sight.
